It’s not ideal for sports photography but it is easy to carry around and the images produced by it are superb. When using the lens for extreme zoom work, a tripod is very useful, if not essential.

What really sets this camera apart from other Canon Eos DSLRs out there is the screen. This is a DSLR that has been unashamedly tweaked to appeal the cinematographers amongst you. The screen folds out and twists (see pictures and video). This not only enables you to see clearly what you are filming but also provides a steadier way to grip the camera. As with all HD filming though, a tripod is recommended.
The screen itself is beautifully clear and sharp. It’s also surprisingly rugged. In fact, the whole camera has a robust and solid feel. The Canon Eos 60D is a DSLR that is built to last.
So movies are great, how about the still pictures? Thankfully, image quality is as excellent as you would expect from a camera of this price. Even with the stock 18-135 lens, the pictures are sharp, full of detail and look wonderful. The brand new 18 megapixel CMOS sensor has been well matched to the improved and updated DIGIC 4 Image Processor. This combination is fast, low in noise and high in sensitivity.
The Canon Eos 60D has a raft of tools on-board to improve your shooting. It produces both a RAW and JPEG image without the need to plug into a computer (although the bundled Canon software is excellent). The Eos 60D also includes a number of effects that you can apply to the shots after you’ve taken them but these seem a little gimmicky and unlikely to be used very often.
Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of the Canon Eos 60D:
PROS
Fantastic image quality – shots are beautiful, rich and low in noise.
Great performance in low light levels. The ISO settings are in the range 100-6400 and are expandable to 12800.
Great build quality and a rugged design. The 60D is a sturdy camera but still lightweight and easy to use.
The autofocus is excellent and very easy to use. There are only 9 focus points but the whole system works very well indeed.
The CMOS sensor and DIGIC 4 Image Processor combine to give very fast shooting speeds (even when converting to JPEG at the same time)
The 60D has both a pop up flash and a wireless flash control for use with Canon Flash Guns.
The flip out screen is a wonderful feature and makes shooting movies or shooting pictures in confined/awkward positions much easier.
HD Movie quality is excellent.
Unbelievable battery life.
CONS
The buttons and dials on the camera take a bit of getting used to. There are so many features and functions it is essential that you read the manual or buy a guide book.
As with all DSLRs, if you want to make the most of full HD filming a tripod is essential.
The built in effects are a bit unnecessary. I would have rather Canon left them out and reduced the price by $50.
All in all, the Canon Eos 60D is a fantastic camera and a great choice for a Photographer who wants to get serious about taking great pictures. It really does bridge the gap between professional quality and affordability. The movie facility makes the camera a great choice for families as well as photophiles. The Eos 60D is a camera that will have you taking hundreds of shots as the quality is outstanding. As you develop your hobby further you’ll find the 60D is very upgradeable as it is compatible with the full range of Canon lenses and has the optical quality to do them all justice.

This camera is also an ergonomic dream, the buttons feel great. I have small hands and have always resisted the XXD series thinking It would be a nuisance to hold it and operate the buttons. Canon really did a great job with this design. The buttons are well places and DEEP so you KNOW you are pressing them, not just tapping a little nub. I’m increasingly pleased every time I use this camera.
I have had the 60D for 2.5 weeks and have taken some videos and pictures with it at some events and some portraits. Some at low ISO and some at high ISO (3200 and 6400). Compared to the XSi, the pictures were better, but not immensely better. What was more important was the technique in taking the photo that made more of a difference. The 60D, with its better size and ergonomics (compared to Rebel series) really helped me to keep my hands steady and to choose the properly settings to get the pictures looking really nice without any post processing. I have used the remote flash trigger with great results and I really really like the camera. The price point now is just amazing for the 60D. And when the camera is put with the 24-70mm f2.8 and 50mm f1.4, the images are loved by all who I take a photo for. Is it because the camera that made the huge difference? No. But it did help me as a photographer to take better pictures.
Before you read any further, the Canon Eos 5D isn’t cheap. If Photography is a serious hobby for you, or if you’re a professional or thinking or making some money from your shots then the Canon Eos 5D could well be the camera for you. If you’re looking for a good quality camera to take pictures of family/friends etc then you’re better off going with the Eos Rebel T2i.
With that disclaimer out of the way we can really start talking about the Canon Eos 5D. It’s important to make it clear that the Eos 5D is a professional quality camera. Start taking shots with this and you will not want to go back to your old camera, whether it’s a DSLR or anything else available.
As this is a professional quality camera, you will be unsurprised to read that Canon have made the Eos 5D a full frame camera, giving you access to the full range of professional wide angle lenses and a slightly larger, more rugged build than other, smaller DSLR cameras.
The new Mark II Eos 5D is as packed full of features as you would expect from a camera of this pedigree. The new full-frame CMOS sensor has an incredible ISO sensitivity which is also expandable. The signal to noise ratio has also been made noticeably better than the old Mark I. The full frame CMOS sensor means the dimensions are exactly the same as 35mm film, giving excellent results with wide-angle lenses and fine control over depth of field.
As well as the new CMOS sensor, the Eos 5D features Canon’s brand new DIGIC 4 Image Processor, making breathtaking, beautiful shots a regular occurrence. The 5D also includes full HD 1080p video capability. Still shots can be taken even when filming in HD. The sound isn’t great in video mode but an external microphone can be plugged into the camera. The 3” LCD screen is without a doubt the best in the business. It is stunningly sharp and clear with an exceptionally wide viewing angle. The screen contains light sensors, automatically adjusting the LCD brightness so it is easy to see, whatever the light conditions are.

Fantastic image quality. Start taking pictures with the Eos 5D and you will never want to go back to your old SLR
Menu system is clear, logical and simple to use. Even advanced settings are easy to change and adjust.
Brilliant ISO performance – out of the box the Canon Eos 5D is capable of up to 6400 but this is expandable to 25600!
The 3” LCD screen is the best on the market by a long way. I have never seen a screen so sharp and clear. The brightness level is even auto-adjusted.
Build quality is very high – the camera is rugged and sturdy but well balanced and easy to use for long periods.
Full HD video is an excellent feature. Movie quality is fantastic.
A side effect of the awesome sensor and image processing is that the Eos 5D can be pretty unforgiving on lenses. Any flaws or weaknesses the lens may have will be shown up by a camera of this quality. You will need to invest in some quality lenses.
There is no built in flash with the Canon Eos 5D but low light performance is good.
The image files are very large so big memory cards and a massive hard disk are a must.
If you want to make the most of the full HD movie capability you will need to use a tripod.

The Images are huge and quite simply stunning. Plus I find that I can get away with very low noise all the way up to 3200 ISO on the 5D Mark II where the 40D was very noisy. In fact I would not hesitate to say the 5D Mark II photos has less noise at 9,600 ISO then the 40D does at 1600 ISO.
My first wedding all I could say all day was wow. I was getting available light photographs I never would have dreamed of before. The new screen also made it incredibly easy to determine if something was in focus or not. When I would switch between my 40D and 5D2 I found out just how spoiled that screen had made me, since the 40D screen looked terrible to me now when previously I thought that had a great screen. I sure was wrong! 920,000 pixels is definitely the way to go on this LCD. I primarily shot with center point (one shot) for my focus and it nailed focus every time. The features of the Canon Eos 7D could run into pages but the real selling points are:
• 18M pixel CMOS sensor with brand new Dual Digic 4 Image processors. This is the perfect combination providing beautiful, noise free images at 8 frames per second.
• Movie mode – record full HD movies at incredible frame rates. The Rebel T2i was good at this but the 7D could really double up as a professional movie camera.
• The enormous ISO range of the Canon Eos 7D means that it can take pictures in very low light levels.
• The new, improved viewfinder is like something from the bridge of the Enterprise! It can magnify, display grid lines, show auto focus points, metering information and is easy to control and adjust.
• The most incredible feature of the Eos 7D though has to be the 19 point Auto focus system. Have a look at the picture below.
• The 7D contains 19 high precision auto focus sensors. You can use the viewfinder display to select which sensors to use or let the camera choose automatically. The 7D then uses computer trickery akin to witchcraft to auto focus in almost any conditions in the shortest time that I’ve seen from a DSLR camera.
• The light metering system, iFCL metering, is also a fantastic feature. The Canon Eos 7D splits the shot into 63 zones, measuring light intensities in each. This means that if the subject of a shot is in front of bright light, the camera will balance the exposure, saving your photos from ruin.
• The build quality is fantastic – the Canon Eos 7D is built to last.
All in all, the Canon Eos 7D is a brilliant piece of kit that will keep you going for years. On the negative side, the Eos 7D is considerably larger and more expensive than the Rebel T2i. If you’re looking for good camera for taking photos of family/friends, I would go for the Rebel. If you’re thinking about taking up Photography as a serious hobby, or perhaps even as way to make some money, then I would whole-heartedly recommend the Eos 7D.

I upgraded from the Rebel XSi and boy what an upgrade it was! I’m mainly a hobbyist photographer even though my friends all say I should quit my day job (they just suck up because I will shoot their events for free!). I upgraded from the XSi because I kept finding myself arguing with the XSi over it’s light metering, focus points and choice of shutter speeds in Aperture Priority mode. I can say without a doubt that the 7D out performs the XSi in every way (and it should since it’s a semi pro camera while the XSi is a consumer camera!).
In these hard economic times, value and quality are even more important. The 7D does cost more than the 40D and 50D when they debuted, but it is worth it. The 7D is better built, has many more standard features, and produces better images. It appears that Canon is very serious about competing with Nikon, which should benefit users of both brands. I’m a frequent upgrader and loyal Canon fan. I traded up from an XSi last year to the T1i, and now this year to the T2i.
